According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence Kasdan is on board to write the second and third instalments of the Disney produced Star Wars Trilogy. This is a good thing given that he wrote The Empire Strikes Back, the best film in the series. To emphasise how pleased I am with this, my reaction to this news was similar to this:
Hopefully this will enable the series to come back to its former glory and give us all something to look forward to in the coming years.
Also writing are Little Miss Sunshine and Toy Story 3 writer Michael Arndt, and X-Men writer Simon Kinberg. I think this is a good way forward for the franchise as long as they attach a good director. When I say good director, what I really mean is someone who doesn’t get in the way of the movie, someone who can direct well enough not to put his/her own stamp on it. The last thing the series needs is a name director to get top billing and ruin it with ego. Of course this is unlikely to happen anyway, given that Disney will probably want to maintain control over it.
